Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Brayden Dental Care offers nitrous oxide sedation to patients who need more than a local anesthesia.
Who can benefit from nitrous oxide sedation?
Anyone who is nervous or anxious about a dental procedure can benefit from nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas).
It is even safe for children, who can become extremely anxious to the point of being terrified.
It helps the patient to relax while still being awake so they understand and can comply with commands from the dentist.
How does nitrous oxide sedation work?
Nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen and then breathed in through a mask that is placed over the nose.
It works quickly and makes the patient relaxed so that they can have the dental procedure done without anxiety or stress.
Often, the patient has pleasant feelings and does not remember most of the procedure.
Are there risks to nitrous oxide sedation?
As with any anesthesia, there are risks such as allergic reaction, complications from other health issues or medications you are taking; always be sure to tell your dentist all the medications you are taking.
With nitrous, if the patient has been given too much the mask can simply be removed or the gas level turned down.
One thing to note, if you are having a procedure done with nitrous oxide you will need a driver to take you home and you should not make any big decisions for the remainder of
Possible side effects
The side effects of nitrous oxide sedation are;
• Headaches: these can often be avoided by the patient receiving 5 minutes of oxygen after the nitrous is turned off
• Excessive sweating
• Nausea and/or vomiting: avoid heavy meals prior and 3 hours after nitrous oxide
Follow your dentists instructions after nitrous and you should experience very few if any side effects from nitrous oxide sedation.
